IMO, political suicide to send US forces and not a UN force.

Definitely.
Even a UN force is risky. They sent an African Union force, lead by Uganda. Far from perfect knowing those militaries are 'flawed', but there's no easy solution here. This region will be unstable for years and years to come.
The best thing the US can do is offer assistance and work via diplomacy.
