Some of them make more money than you can dream of... most of them are doing it for the money freely. I don't know what backside story shit you heard, but the major productions (aka most of what you watch on your TV and web from the US are major productions).

That is not to say underground shit happens, but it ain't as common in the US as it is in Eastern Europe.
