A brewery in Scotland claimed it has produced the world’s strongest beer, Brewmeister's Armageddon, which has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 65 percent. Beers typically have an ABV between 3 and 10 percent.
According to the Brewmeister website, the beer is made of crystal malt, wheat, flaked oats and Scottish spring water. It’s so strong because it is freeze-fermented, which entails cooling the beer to freezing temperatures. As many alcohol aficionados know, water, but not alcohol, freezes. So when the ice is removed, the world’s strongest beer is left behind.
Sounds like it would taste bad, right?
Wrong, according to its makers, who suggest it be consumed “like a fine whisky.” Brewmesiter describes the flavor as “malty, hoppy, slightly sweet” with “lots of yeast.”
The company warns: “Be careful though, smelling it is probably enough to put you over the limit!”
Brewmeister founder Lewis Shand concluded that saying the beer “’delivers a punch' doesn’t quite cut it.”
"Delivers a supersonic-charged explosion and conveys the taster to Drunksville is probably more appropriate," Shand told STV.com. "In some respects, it is closer to a liqueur than a beer, but it is classified as a beer and we are pleased with it."
Brewmeister’s Armageddon trumps the former record-holder of the world’s strongest beer made by Brewster. The beer, called The End of History, is a blonde Belgian ale with a 55 percent ABV packaged in a stuffed animal case.
