Microsoft Affirms "Renewed Focus" On PC Gaming

March 22, 2014 - 12:36pm
In his GDC keynote, Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer promised that the company will put more effort into PC gaming this year.

When asked about Valve's Steam Machines and Steam OS, Spencer praised Valve for its commitment to PC gaming and admitted that Microsoft was wrong not to pay enough attention to its home platform.

"A renewed focus on Windows and PC gaming inside Microsoft is definitely happening," he added. "You will see more focus from us — not to go compete with what Valve has done, but because we also understand as the platform holder it's important for us to invest in the platform in a real way. We're fundamentally committed to that."

Spencer was careful not to give any specifics, but he promised that Microsoft will reveal more about its PC gaming efforts this summer.

The Microsoft Studios head was then asked about the fate of the highly criticized "Games for Windows Live" service which is rumored to be shutting down by July. Again, he promised an official decision "very soon" after Microsoft "make sure we've got a thoughtful plan that supports the people that currently have games on Games for Windows Live. It's a conversation we're having."
