There's a difference though, Rushdie is a real writer and 'The Satanic Verses' is a real novel.
It's almost certain that the sole purpose of that video was to make sure people were offended/started rioting, not to offer another perspective on Islam, not to create debate or anything else. I don't think that was the case for Salman Rushdie.

I don't think people should avoid offending others in their 'work', there's always going to be people who are offended. You could be offended by the Bible and the Quran because of it's misanthropic views (if you take it literally). That doesn't mean we should ban it/avoid making it.
It's different when your only intention is to create riots.
